Perhaps it was the bone duet at the end of "Ring of Fire," which started out as jazz improvisation, segued 'into "Never On Sunday" and ulti-mately resolved itself as a spirited rendition of "Frosty the Snowman." Or perhaps it was the guitar solo during "Purple Haze," which was enhanced by screaming feedback and dive-bombing whammy-bar ef-- fects. Maybe it was the fact that the Bobs, being an a cappella vocal group, performed said solos without the benefit of instruments. As impressive as the four-member group's instrumental imitation was, their delivery of lyrics was even better, blending elements from a wide range of musical styles into a patchwork quilt of color, humor and satire. Their repertoire ranged from cover tunes such as the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out" and Peggy Lee's "Fever" to original songs dealing with modern-day concerns such as mall-induced angst, the nutritional value of diet foods and finding love while sharing a wash load in a laundromat.
The arrangements were rich in musical cross-fertilization, as in the group's rendition of the Jimmy Cliff reggae song "Sitting in Limbo," sung over doo-wop harmonies and a vocalized drum beat copied from Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." In a tune called "Spontaneous Human Combustion" they combined lyrics reminiscent of the heavy metal band Spinal Tap with the vocal stylings and choreography of Manhattan Transfer. While the members, Richard Bob Greene, Janie Bob Scott, Matthew Bob Stull and Joe Bob Finetti, have all adopted the same middle name, the group name came from the acronym for the dog-show term Best Of Breed. In August, Overstreet ordered that Douglas be reinstated in January, a decision UK is appealing. "I'm going to try to remain calm," Overstreet told UK's attorneys during a hearing. "You are clearly trying to single him out. You cannot treat Dr. Douglas differently." When Gay Elste, an attorney in UK's legal office, asked in a motion for permission to give orthopedic-surgery patients a special consent form, Overstreet became angry.
That form would tell patients that the medical school thinks one of its residents is not qualified. If UK gave such a letter to Douglas' patients, every doctor's patients would have to get an identical letter, Overstreet said. Douglas' attorney, Tim Philpot, told the judge that the motions were "the most humiliating and embarrassing thing they've done to him. They want him to wear a sign that says, 'I'm a black, dumb Overstreet also denied UK's motion that Douglas be supervised by an attending physician while on duty, although other residents with his seniority needn't be supervised. Overstreet told UK to make sure that Douglas is back in the orthopedic-residency program in January.
After the hearing, Douglas said he felt UK wants to make returning to the program difficult for him. He said he does not think another orthopedic-residency program would accept him after his run-in with UK. "For all intents and purposes, I am now damaged goods," he said. LEXINGTON, Ky. A judge has told the University of Kentucky that it cannot single out a black doctor who successfully sued the school for discrimination.
Fayette Circuit Judge Rebecca Overstreet also criticized UK on Friday for dragging its feet on reinstating Donald Douglas, the first black in the orthopedic-residency program at UK. Douglas filed a complaint in 1987, saying he had been subjected to racial slurs while in the program. He was dropped from it in 1990, during his third year in the five-year program.
