Family

Jacob Hennig was born June 1, 1859 in Brigidau, Austria; he was the son of Michael and Philipina (Fischer) Hennig. He worked in Kishineff, Bessarabia (Russia) on the Krebs estate. There, he met and later married Katherine Thomas on January 25, 1885; she was born March 22, 1865 in Josefsberg, Austria and was the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Broeder) Thomas. While in Kishineff, sons Rudolph (May 4, 1886) and Philip (October 16, 1888) were born.

In 1889, the Hennigs immigrated to the Canada. They, along with other relatives, traveled from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Medicine Hat, North-West Territories. They stayed in Medicine Hat for two years where Jacob worked in a coal mine and for the railroad. A daughter, Caroline, was born August 17, 1890 while they were living in Medicine Hat. In 1891 they moved from what would become southern Alberta to northern Alberta.

The Hennig family settled near Fort Saskatchewan, though soon moved to Beaver Hills, which was later named Josephburg. Jacob homesteaded the southeast quarter of Section 4, Township 55, Range 21, West of the 4th Meridian (4-55-21-W4). The remaining children born to Jacob and Katherine were: Elizabeth (July 16, 1892), Frank (May 16, 1894), Adella (May 13, 1896), Mary (July 8, 1897), Henry Emil (June 10, 1898), Hilda (July 8, 1900), Carl Jacob (April 27, 1902), Edmond Leopold (November 1, 1904), Alfred Michael (1906) and Emma Katherine (July 5, 1907). Jacob Hennig died April 7, 1935 and Katherine Hennig died May 9, 1940.

Son Philip died in 1897 at the age of nine, son Henry Emil died on February 7, 1902 at the age of four, and daughter Caroline died in 1907 at the age of sixteen.

Rudolph married Caroline Manz on February 3, 1909; they had two daughters, Helen (Shackleton) and Leona (Lyle), and one son, Alfred (Fred). Rudolph was a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the United Farmers of Alberta from 1926 to 1935.

Elizabeth married Reinhold Manz on February 14, 1912; they had three sons, Wilfred Leonard, Edgar Theodore (died at one month) and Carl Marvin, and two daughters, Eleanor Margaret (Crimmon) and Marion Elizabeth (McLeod).

Adella married Edward Krebs on February 14, 1917; they had one daughter, Doris (Becker), and one son, Edward. Frank married Elsie Hohn on April 10, 1917; they had one daughter, Margaret (Iseke).

Hilda married Reinhold Mohr on December 20, 1922; they had one daughter, Catherine (Andrews).

Carl married Katherine Mohr on December 22, 1925; they had one son, Morley, and one daughter, Marilyn (Boles). Edmond attended Mission House College in Plymoth, Wisconsin beginning in 1922, was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Christ and married Ida Reineking in 1932.

Emma married George A. Mohr on December 5, 1933.

Alfred took over the family farm in 1928 and married Elsie Berg on November 4, 1938; they had two daughters, Mae (Selinske) and Patricia (Laverdiere). Mary became and nurse and married Herman Boehme in 1940; they had one daughter, Marianne (Symington) and one son, Eric.

Johann Karl Manz was born December 31, 1850 in Dornfeld, Galacia; he was the son of Philip and Katharina (Breitmeyer) Manz. Karl married Elisabetha Krebs on November 21, 1875; she was born August 25, 1856 in Derzow, Galacia and was the daughter of Philip and Karolina (Bisanz) Krebs. Karl, Elisabetha and their seven children immigrated to Canada in 1898. The children were: Edward (circa (ca.) 1878), Adela (ca. 1882), Gustav (ca. 1884), Alois (ca. 1886), Reinhold (ca. 1888), Caroline (ca. 1890), and Leonard (Curly) (ca. 1894); their eighth child, Olinda, was born in Canada on December 22, 1898. Two children, Caroline's twin Karl and John died before the family emigrated.

The family traveled to the North-West Territories, settling near Deep Creek. Beginning in 1899, Karl homesteaded the northeast quarter of Section 28, Township 55, Range 21, West of the 4th Meridian (28-55-21-W4), near Elisabetha's family. Adela married Andrew Underschultz on April 13, 1902; they had five children, Edward, Albert, Elsie (Schneider), Carl and Dorothy (Stambaugh). Edward married Karoline Gauf. Alois married Minnie Krebs on November 25, 1908; they had four children, Monie, Leonora, Raymond and Velma. Caroline married Rudolph Hennig on February 3, 1909. Gustav married Theresa Krebs on April 16, 1911. Reinhold married Elizabeth Hennig on February 14, 1912. Curly married Doris Coone. Olinda married William Philip Wagner on July 25, 1922; they had two daughters, Dorcas Aldyth and Margaret Elaine, and one son, William Charles Philip. Karl Manz died in 1934 and Elisabetha Manz in 1937.
